SSI Engineering Design Project Highlights 2020

It’s been a year unlike any other. Despite the challenges and uncertainty facing the world with the current pandemic, SSI remains committed to you, our valued clients. We continue to strive to change the world one project at a time, working as an extension of your team providing expert engineering design and inspection services.

This year has been an exceptional one of growth and commitment to our core services. While many architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) firms have seen a decline in work, SSI projects continued to accelerate, positively impacting the operations of many industrial facilities.

In 2020, SSI performed a total of 61 silo inspection projects for hundreds of silos, completed 34 design projects, engineered a wide variety of projects, and added a new team member to support our valued clients. Here are a few of this year’s project highlights:

Blend Silo Design - Alabama - Part of plant expansion

New blending silo for the new kiln being built in Ragland, Alabama. This new structure is 258 feet tall, making it one of the tallest buildings in St. Clair County! The new silo has a capacity of 13,000t of raw meal and will feed the new kiln which will be able to produce 5,000 metric tons of clinker per day. Congratulations to the team on the completion of this project!

Raw Meal Silo, Cement Silos Design - Indiana - Part of plant expansion

New raw meal silo and two cement storage silos for the new line being built in Mitchell, Indiana.  The raw meal silo has an internal diameter of 59 feet, has a wall that is 178 feet tall, and has a designed storage capacity of 13,000 metric tons. The cement silos stand side by side and share a common wall. These silos have internal diameters of 60 feet, stand 251’-6” tall, and combined have approximately 32,000 metric tons of storage. The raw meal silo wall was recently slipped, and the design of the cement silos continues!

The slip for the latest SSI silo design is underway!  This raw meal silo is a vital part of a major expansion of a cement production facility.

Cement Terminal – Texas

This new cement loadout terminal is the first in an expected series of smaller cement terminals. This one, in the north Dallas, Texas suburbs, will be fed by trucks from the nearby production facility, and will allow suppliers to purchase cement for important infrastructure projects.

Ohio Batch House Project

This batch house, where raw materials are stored in eleven different storage spaces and mixed for the production of glass at the site, was completed in 2020. With multiple equipment floors and interior walls to subdivide the space for the different storage compartments, it required significant coordination with the design team both internally and externally.  The main structure had an upper internal diameter of 47’-4” and stands 163 feet tall.

In other news, SSI continues to grow! Three new people joined the team of industry-recognized engineers and designers during the past few years. These include:

  • Tim Harvey, P.E., Senior Structural Engineer. Tim is a structural engineer with 40+ years of industry expertise in engineering design and silo inspection. He began working with SSI in 2020.

  • Dale Schiefer, P.E., Inspection and Repair Manager. Dale has completed 40+ inspection and engineering trips since he joined SSI in 2018.

  • Tom Johnston, P.E. Tom is world-renowned expert on silo design, behavior, and analysis. He started working with SSI in 2016.
